Can anyone advise me what to set my non-hdr 4k with with my xbox one s and my Bt youview box? I'm aware of what the FRC does- but will selecting 10 bit in theory make my picture better or worse? Someone might like to correct me here but 10bit is only utilised for HDR output. It will make no difference what you set it for and look exactly the same on your screen. It is always best to see for yourself so try each way and see what you think but I would suggest just sticking to 8bit.
It is sometimes just worth checking as if the box is set to output at p UHD it means the box will scale up the picture before outputting to your tv on non UHD content but if you output at p it means your TV will scale up the picture and in most cases the TV will do a better job than the box.

Color depth has always been important, but with the rise of ultra HD 4K and HDR the ability to more accurately display color gradations and nuances has become even more essential. Of course, the higher the color bit depth the better was true when p was dominant but the distinction carries more weight as images become denser and more loaded with metadata.
We mentioned metadata just now — that usually refers to added information beyond the basics of the image such as resolution and framerate. HDR, or high dynamic range, falls under metadata. The more information a panel displays the better and more accurate the image. Bit depth and the effect the spec has on color representation have particular appeal to enthusiast users.
Gamers, movie and TV buffs, photographers, and video professionals all place great value on color fidelity and know that every bit counts. Since modern display panels use pixels controlled by digital processors, each pixel represents bits of data.
Each bit has either a zero or one value for every primary color: red, green, and blue, aka RGB. We calculate them as x x to arrive at a total of For bit panels, every pixel shows up to versions of each primary color, in other words to the power of three or 1.

There's a lot of good talk about 10 bit and a lot of bad talk about 8 bit. The computer can tell the difference, but can you? Bit depth determines the number of colors that can be stored for an image whether it's a still picture or a frame from a video footage. Each image is composed of the basic red, green, and blue channels. Each channel can display a variety of shades of the appropriate color. The number of shades determines the bit depth of the image.
A 1-bit depth image means there are only two color shades per color channel. For a 3-bit depth image there are two to the power of three shades, or a total of eight shades per channel. This is different values per channel. When combining those channels we can have x x different color combinations, or roughly 16 million. A bit image can display 1, shades of color per channel, or billions of color combinations.
Don't get confused with the bit color. A color is represented by these three basic channels excluding the alpha channel as we just talk about color, not transparency. The color bit depth is the sum of the bit depths of each channel. A bit color means each color channel can have 8-bits of information. The majority of displays on the market are displaying images with 8-bit depth, whether these are desktop monitors, laptop screens, mobile device screens, or media projectors.
There are bit monitors too but not many of us have those. If you are curious: the human eye can recognize about 10 million colors. As we see, neither our eyes, nor most of our displays can show us the glory of the bit images. What's the point of having so much data we can't see? For displaying there's no use at all.
Even if the devices can interpret that vast amount of data, our eyes won't tell the difference. The only advantage is when processing that data.
If you have an 8-bit image and you want to stretch the saturation or contrast more evenly for some reason, the processing software may not have enough data and "tear" parts of the histogram.
As a result blank bars of missing data are formed. If there is more dense data to work with, expanding the range would not cause such gaps. As a result we have the so called "banding" where on the right it is the original gradient and on the left is the "stretched" color spectrum:.
Being more precise usually won't call for heavy post-processing. At the end you will have a quality result. If heavy processing is required this is where the 10 or more bits per channel show their advantage. When stretching the values of the pixels the software will have lots of data to work with and thus produce a smoother result of high quality. Working with 8-bit still images or 8-bit video footage is not bad unless you plan to do a vast amount of color or contrast changes.
Being a precise shooter is always paying off, but there are times when you might need higher bit depth or "deeper bit depth" files.
Raw still images are files of 12, 14, or bit depth. Since all TVs can represent red, green, and blue values, variations of each essentially means that the TV can reproduce xx colors, or 16, colors in total. This is considered VGA, and was used for a number of years as the standard for both TVs and monitors.
For this reason, many of the gradients in an image will look more more smooth like in the image above, and 10 bit images are quite noticeably better looking than their 8-bit counterparts. While this is technically a 64x wider color range than even 10 bit color, a TV would have to be able to produce images bright enough to actually see the color difference between the two. HDR is a standard set up by Samsung to ensure a peak brightness of 1, nits.
Samsung says this standard also uses a special technology called Ultra Black which reduces glare from lights and the sun on your television set, so this standard may be worth looking into if you have glare issues. This standard is obviously only available on Samsung TVs, which usually range from the mid-high end of the market. It holds essentially the same specification as HDR10, but Samsung threw in that anti-glare technology to separate itself from the pack. Dolby Vision uses 12 bit color, giving a range technically 64x as wide as 10 bit.
Dolby vision aims to reproduce 4, nits as a target and caps out at 10, However, it is important that TVs actually hit this standard so that users can discern between the 64x wider color gamut. There are a few other HDR profiles floating around. However, it allows broadcasters to transmit it and the SDR signal all at once.
Advanced HDR is another tech meant mostly for broadcast television. Currently, live television does not support 10 bit color. It is quite possible that a 4k TV does not have true HDR compatibility at all, and even if it does, you need to make sure the panel is rated to process the signal. Some manufacturers will label their televisions as HDR even if they only support 8-bit color. This is because there are 2 different specifications that can classify a TV as having HDR compatibility: contrast and color depth.
Contrast is the difference between the blackest black a panel can produce and the whitest white. The Rec color space is a range of color.
It was defined in as a standard for bit depth of 10 or 12 bits for 4k and 8k TVs. Some manufacturers will produce televisions with 10 or 12 bit panels that are not able to actually process the color space, leading to an image that is not actually 10 bit.

When we use graduated ND filters, we often are trying to limit the dynamic range and bring this range within the capabilities possible by the media we are recording on.
If shooting an indoor scene during the day for example, we might add an ND filter to part of the image of the window to limit blowing the highlights. The flip side to this is, if you can not use ND filters, if you forgot to bring them to the shoot you may be forced to pump more light into the interior scene to balance against the light coming from the window.
Imagine an alternate universe where a 16bit cinema camera capable of recording 20 f-stops of dynamic range in raw uncompressed format, and this camera can be bought for the price of a 5D3, would this be good or bad? If we could bypass the h video compression and capture the direct stream coming from the chip, then we would have a good argument of why we need to spend 20x time on a digital cinema camera.
Yes granted though, some of the banding is also due to the H compression as compression schemes will naturally target flat colors more aggressively than more detailed areas of the the image. This arrangement of dots and colour is effectively what an ink jet printer driver does, although your printer may have 4 to 8 different ink colours, the driver tells the printer how to arrange the dots of colour to achieve all the other colours in the image.
An 8 ink printer will produce better results because it has more colors dynamic range to use to describe all the other colours. With an electronic image, different brightness levels are achieved by applying different amounts of voltages to each of 3 sub-pixels RGB which when combined makes one pixel. The same can be said via an image made from say 16 colors rather than 16million colors.

Bumping up to 10 bits multiplies the levels of color by four. Some phones support HDR now, and even some 8-bit displays can fake it using a technique called frame rate control FRC. Chroma subsampling is a separate beast altogether. This is often called color resolution, as compared to the spatial resolution, like 4K. As an example, 4K Ultra HD video has a spatial resolution 3, x 2, pixels — but the color of each pixel is derived from a much smaller sampling than that.
With subsampling, for every two rows of four pixels, color is sampled from just two pixels in the top row and zero pixels in the bottom row. Surprisingly, this seemingly dramatic approximation has little effect on the color, as our eyes are more forgiving to chrominance color than luminance light.
Note that color resolution is tied to spatial resolution. A 4K video with subsampling will still sample color from more pixels than a Full HD video with subsampling. If moving to bit has little effect on what we can actually see right out of the camera, why is it important?
It all comes down to postproduction. Even if your final output is still an eight-bit monitor, working in a bit space will give you more control and yield a better result that will lower the likelihood of banding when viewed on the 8-bit display.
